The Rock and Ice Ultra is an extreme Canadian race in an extreme Canadian environment. There is an infinite and international selection of quality winter wear appropriate for our unique climate. It all comes down to appreciating basic facts about the local climate and then making educated choices to ensure personal comfort.

FACT: Yellowknife is a DESERT - extremely COLD and extremely DRY

In a recent climate study of Canada's 100 largest cities, Yellowknife ranked first in 13 categories, including: coldest winter, coldest spring, coldest year-round, most cold days, most deep snow cover days, most extreme wind chill, most high wind chill days, driest winter air.

PERSONAL COMFORT: Gore-Tex does not work well in our climate

Gore-tex will only trap in and freeze body moisture causing discomfort and potential cold related injuries and illnesses. There is no moisture in our air and therefore no need for 'water proof' or even 'water resistant' outter wear - breathable fabrics are key to comfort.

Know yourself, and know your gear BEFORE you arrive! Are you an elite racer? A mid-pack racer? A treckker? We hope to see 100% of you finish and finish feeling fantastic.
